Canfield 22, Matthews 0

Saturday, September 10, 2011. Vienna, OH. The visiting Canfield Little Cardinals ground out a 22-0 victory against a scrappy Matthews team. Canfield took first possession and drove down the field only to be stopped at the 15 yard line. Matthews first play from scrimmage broke for 20 yards before Canfield's David Crawford stripped the ball and Angelo Petracci recovered. Petracci capped off Canfield's next possession with a 1 yard TD run and added on the 2 point conversion for an 8-0 Cardinal lead.

Matthews next drive also ended with a Crawford caused fumble covered up Vince Giordano. Paul Brienz took a sweep right in to the endzone for a six yard score just before the half. PAT failed Canfield 14-0.

In the second half Canfield's defense continued to pressure Matthews. Michael Rubesich kept pressure on the Mustang QB forcing several incompletions. Austin householder stripped the ball which was covered up by Crawford. The ensuing drive was capped off with another Brienz touchdown from 12 yards out. PAT good, Canfield 22-0.

Brienz lead all rushers with 15 carries for 77 yards, Vinny Fiorenza 6 for 56, Crawford 10 for 49, Petracci 6 for 25. Marcos Cruz had on pass broken up on defense. The Little Cards will face the Austintown Colts Sunday, September 18th.

Canfield 38 Mathews 0

The Canfield Little Cardinals 120# squad traveled to Vienna Saturday and came away with a 38-0 victory over the Mathews Mustangs. Canfield improved to 3-0 on the season led by a defense that has yet to yield a touchdown.


Canfield scored early and often as Jacob Whittenberger and Andre Crump hit paydirt from 30 and 20 yards respectively. Tyler Stein and Dominic Yozwiak added conversion runs to give Canfield a 16-0 lead after 1 quarter. Ethan Fletcher scored from 9 yards out to give Canfield a 22-0 half time lead.


After another strong stand by the Cards defense Whittenberger blasted over the right side behind the blocks of Andy Murphy and Richie Hofus for the touchdown. Yozwiak added his second conversion run of the day to make it 30-0. Fletcher's 20 yard burst early in the 4th quarter along with Jake Kowal's conversion run provided the final margin. Canfield utilized 15 different ballcarriers in the game.
Coach Donadee cited Nick Grawford, Glenn Griswold, Cole Morrell, Jake Donadee, BJ Parker, PJ Haloff, Zach Smith, and Colin Leonard for their efforts on offense. Defensively Whittenberger, Fletcher, Bailey Flanagan, McCoy Watkins, and Stein led the charge.


The Little Cards return to action this Sunday when the Austintown Colts visit Bob Dove Field.

CLC 120 JV squad 22 Howland 0

The Canfield Little Cardinals 120# JV team posted a 22-0 victory over the Howland Little Tigers Tuesday. Canfield (2-0) struck first when Conor Crogan burst 26 yards up the middle to give the Cards a 6-0 lead. A Paris Bumgardner sack and fumble recovery at the Howland 35 led to Chance Merlin's 5 yard TD run. Jake Kowal added the conversion and the lead was 14-0 at the half.


Kowal's interception ended a Howland threat early in third quarter. The offense then took over with Crogan taking a reverse 42 yards to paydirt. Kowal rolled right and hit Crogan with the conversion to make it 22-0.
Crogan led all rushers with 76 yards on 5 tries, while Yozwiak added 66 and Merlin 52 on six totes each.


The defense was led by Matthew Zaremski who had a sack and a fumble recovery. While Gio Saadey, Caden White , Chris Smith, Seth Hull, David Rhinehart, Greg Karas, Mario Mavar, Race Mingus, and Bryce Beal were cited for their play. On offense Dominic Joseph, Kevin Walls, James and Joseph Warren, Gavin Tareshawty, Joseph Bruno, Angelo Cestone, David Noday, Nathan Ritenhour, Alexander George and Alex Smyczynski were cited for their play.

The 95 # Canfield Little Cardinal Football Team moved to 2-1 with a win over Mathews on Saturday. Canfield beat Mathews 32-16. Nathan Fiorenza scored 2 touchdowns and had 3 extra points (2 point conversions). He ran for 2 conversions and caught a pass for the other. Chase Lowry scored a touchdown as did his brother Broc Lowry. Chase Lowry ran for a 2 point conversion and also threw for one. Defensively Canfield was solid with standout performances by FIorenza, Andrew Morchak, AJ Wise and Xavier Rowbottom. Up next for the Little Cardinals is Austintown at home, game time 1:00 PM Sunday September 18.
